The Foundation for the Promotion of Music, Inc. was organized in 1974 with four goals for Gainesville and the surrounding area:
a. honoring outstanding musicians
b. recognizing superior student musicians
c. encouraging the study of music
d. presenting programs of interest to the community.
The Foundation for the Promotion of Music (FPM), thus has two primary annual activities: public recitals and music awards.
Three Stellar Student Recitals present outstanding young musicians in our community. In addition to their performances, we feature visiting musicians. Our recitals usually are held at the Thomas Center, a beautiful historic building that is an important part of the musical life of Gainesville, Florida.
Recipients of two Betsy Schnell Youth Awards, the Sarah B. Fouse Wind Award and the Dorothy Reaves String Award are selected by auditions and are presented in performance at the annual FPM meeting in the Spring. When several string students are competing, the Reaves auditions are held as a public recital. Selected by FPM from its members and public nominations, a Musician of the Year Award honors an adult in our community for long standing achievement and contributions to our musical environment. This award is presented at the annual FPM meeting.
As a senior club of the Florida Federation of Music, Inc., we support activities that promote American music and encourage our young people in performance and scholarship opportunities, including our Gainesville Area Junior Festival.
